Smash the Pattern: The Real Reason You’re Stuck (And How to Change It)

There was a moment in my conversation with Dr. Robb Kelly that hit differently.

He said:
“Human beings replicate past behavior all of the time.”

Simple.
Uncomfortable.
True.

Most people don’t lack potential.
They lack new patterns.

The Invisible Loop You’re Living In

Dr. Rob explained something fascinating about the brain.

There’s a part called the basal ganglia - the repetition center. It’s responsible for patterns. Habits. Automatic behavior.

You go to the same restaurant.
Sit in the same seat.
Take the same route to work.
React the same way in arguments.
Stay in the same types of relationships.

Not because you consciously choose to.

But because your brain loves familiarity.

Repetition becomes identity.
And identity becomes your “life.”

You’re Not Stuck. You’re Repeating.

One of the most freeing lines he said was:

“Nobody is watching. Nobody cares what you’re doing.”

At first that sounds harsh.
But it’s actually freedom.

Most people don’t change because they’re afraid:

What if it doesn’t work?

What if people laugh?

What if I fail?

But the reality?

Everyone is thinking about their own problems.

The fear that keeps you small is mostly imagined.

The 300 Pathway Question

Dr. Rob mentioned that hundreds of neural pathways die daily.

The question isn’t whether your brain changes.
It’s what you’re replacing those patterns with.

Same commute.
Same complaints.
Same internal dialogue.

Or…

New skill.
New environment.
New response.
New expectation.

You are either reinforcing the past
or building the future.

Every single day.

The “Shower Before Coffee” Rule

I loved how practical he made it.

If you want to start changing your life?

Don’t start with a business plan.

Start by changing the order of your morning.

If you normally:

Wake up → coffee → shower

Try:

Wake up → shower → coffee

Sounds small.

But it interrupts autopilot.

It signals to your brain:
“I’m not a prisoner of routine.”

Big change doesn’t start big.

It starts different.

Stop Thinking Small

Another line that stuck with me:

“Why build a business… when you can build an empire?”

Most people aim for “stable.”

Dr. Robb challenged that.

He grew up poor. Arrested. Homeless. Lost everything.

And he decided that wasn’t the pattern he would continue.

The pattern in his family was:

Work. Survive. Repeat.

He smashed it.

Not overnight.

But deliberately.

The Ripple Effect of One Compliment

There was also this beautiful moment where he talked about telling someone:

“Nice sneakers.”

That’s it.

Two words.

And you change someone’s day.

Because when you give - genuinely give - your brain releases dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, endorphins.

Helping someone doesn’t just elevate them.

It rewires you.

Legacy isn’t built in grand gestures.

It’s built in daily ones.

Expect Great Things. Daily.

If there was one takeaway from this conversation, it’s this:

Expect great things daily.

Not once.
Not when things are going well.
Not when you “feel motivated.”

Daily.

Because the brain believes what you repeatedly tell it.

And your life follows what your brain expects.

Final Thought

If you’re stuck…

It may not be your circumstances.
It may not be your background.
It may not even be your skillset.

It might just be a pattern.

And patterns can be broken.

Legacy isn’t what happens later.

It’s the patterns you decide to smash today.
